Making a Write Way Tool Box:
A tool kit is essential in making quick and easy cakes using the Write Way method. In my book, “Creative Cakes Anyone Can Make”, I show you all the items needed to decorate cakes. If you live close to a Wal-mart or craft store, you will be able to purchase the supplies. If you live in a rural area, the following websites offer supplies as well.
Tool Box Needs:
- Plastic shoebox, tackle box or craft organizer
- Food color paste - I use the color paste or gel as it creates vibrant colors with a small amount. Keep blue, red, green, yellow, violet and pink in your tool kits so you are always ready to decorate.
- Decorating tips - I use stainless steel decorating tips. They are inexpensive and will last you a lifetime if you clean and store them properly. All tips have a universal number that help decorators buy according to the cake design requirements. In my books, I suggest having the following tips:
2 writing tips - #2, #4
3 star tips - #16, #18, # 21
1 rose tip - #104
1 leaf tip - #352
- Disposable pastry bags or freezer storage bags - Disposable pastry bags can be purchased on-line or in the cake decorating section of your local craft store. I usually purchase my disposable pastry bags on-line to save money. If using freezer storage bags, I recommend using pastry couplers to add extra support with the tips, With couplers you can interchange your tips as well.
- Metal Straight Spatula - I use a straight edge spatula in icing and smoothing my cakes. There are many sizes to choose from - I personally use a four-inch and six-inch spatulas.
- Turntable - You can purchase an expensive cake-decorating wheel or an inexpensive kitchen Lazy Susan.
- Sharp knife, scissors and dental floss - you probably have these in your home. Add them to your took kit for easy access when needed.
- Bamboo sticks - Many of my cake designs use bamboo sticks. They can be found in the utensil aisle of most grocery stores.
- Chopsticks - I use chopsticks to make frosting roses (see in Chapter Three of my book). Chopsticks are also used in stacking tiered cakes. Chopsticks are sold in the Asian food aisle of grocery stores. I always bring some home after a dinner at a Chinese restaurant.
Keeping a Tidy Tool Kit:
Store your tool kit in your kitchen where it can be accessed easily. After using the tool kit items, wash with soapy warm water and dry. Do not put wet items back into the toolbox. I store my color gels in a storage bags to prevent from color getting on other tool kit items.
